thumbnail Hello,

Having recently parted with their high-profile British coach following a string of poor results, the club's General Secretary has stressed that it was for a mix of two reasons...

It's been just over three weeks since Desmond Bulpin was shown the door by Shillong Lajong FC, and Larsing Ming Sawyan has explained both the decision to bring and then part with the Scot, in an exclusive interview with football magazine 90 Minutes.

"We’d gotten Desmond [Bulpin] because of the experience that he had. He’d been coaching in England for a long time, and also had Asian experience in Uzbekistan, Philippines, and even India. So keeping all this in mind, we brought him down, and simultaneously to enhance the squad," he said.

However, it wasn’t purely a decision based on results, as Lajong’s long-term philosophy of playing attractive football was allegedly not being followed under the Englishman, according to the Lajong official.

"Also, at the end of the day, it seemed like that the typical, direct style of football that Bulpin promoted, didn’t suit our players. So keeping in mind our long term vision of building a team that plays the ball on the ground, we decided to make the change," Sawyan was quoted.

The Lajong official went on to state that the mix of the two reasons meant that Bulpin’s tenure had to be cut short. "Unfortunately the short-passing and possession-based game, which has always been our style, was disbanded," Sawyan continued.

"Now if that guaranteed us results in the short-term, we may not have had a big problem. But neither were we getting results and nor were we sticking to our philosophy, so definitely both reasons had a role to play in the decision," Larsing added.

The North-Eastern club were on 15 points from 17 games played in the I-League when Bulpin was relieved of his manegerial duties.

Thangboi Singto is currently caretaker manager of the club having drawn, won and lost a match each under the interim coach.
