ONGC under Santosh Kashyap are definitely on the upward spiral, as they registered another impressive win away against United Sikkim FC, as the Oilmen are now 7th in the I League.
The former Mohun Bagan coach was all smiles after the game, as his team broke the deadlock in the 89th minute to clinch a valuable 3 points.
“It was a great victory, I feel we defended excellently. United Sikkim is a good team that plays very good football and it is hard luck or bad luck for them that we won the match. I am very happy, the boys did an excellent job, just as I told them” he opined.
The North-East is never an easy place to win matches, as alongwith the dramatic change in weather conditions, the two teams from the region also have a huge fan-following. Kashyap accepted as much, as he explained, “I think Sikkim and Lajong are the toughest matches for away teams. The boys had to put an extra effort and they did just that to get all 3 points”.
ONGC have played some quality football of late, which one would not associate them with, before the appointment of Kashyap. While the former Air India coach had aimed for a top seven finish, he wont allow complacency to set in, amongst his boys.
He stated, “When I joined the team we were in 14th place and I had set a target of a 7th place finish and I wanted to achieve that. But now we will see, match by match, how far we can go”.
The coach was impressed by the resolute defending at display and credited his defenders for the win, with a special mentioning.
“All the defenders were good but Robin Gurung has been excellent," he added. While the away side did not always dominate the proceedings, ONGC's head coach was delighted with how the goal eventually came for his side.
