thumbnail Hello,

The Sporting coach was pleased with his team's effort in the 1-0 win over fellow Goan side Churchill Brothers...

Oscar Bruzon Barreras looks to be a satisfied man these days as wins over Churchill Brothers SC and Salgaocar FC recently have rocketed his squad’s confidence to keep pushing themselves. Their aim of finishing in the top half of the table looks achievable if they do continue this good form.

On being asked whether his new Spanish recruits, namely Angel Berlanga and Juanfri, have made the difference for the Flaming Oranje, he stressed on the importance of team work as opposed to being reliant on a particular group.

”It's the hard work of the local talent. The Goans along with the Manipuris and then the foreigners, not just the Spanish players, like – Kalu (Nnnana), Angel, Juanfri, (Seiya) Sugishita

Bruzon believes that the hard work put in by the squad is beginning to show results and doesn’t believe that it was just down to luck.

“I am announcing from last week. This (beating Churchill Brothers) is not luck. This is the result of all the hard work through the weeks of training. The most significant thing is that the team is incredibly improving. Beating Salgaocar and Churchill was not luck.”

The morale in the Sporting camp is certainly high and with it the expectations of the fans also has gone up.

“I follow my line. From the day one that I arrived, from 1st December, I said that we have to finish in the top half. I know that we are close now, but we have to continue fighting as all the guys are playing well. Besides the language and a lot of other things, football is a universal language,” he quipped.

“As a coach, I'm only focusing on my line, and all the guys are responding very well to the line. The merit of this is not only on the coach. It's because the players are working hard and in a proper line,” he added.

Angel Berlanga has adapted and been well integrated into this Sporting side as he has been handed the responsibility of breaking down the opposition’s attacks.

“Angel is actually a defender. In the match against Salgaocar was the first time he played as a midfielder because I wanted him to win all the balls in the midfield. In Churchill, they have Akram Moghrabi and Henry Antchouet in the attack, so I had to make sure Angel remains consistent as per his tactical position,” he explained.

Sporting Clube de Goa next face Pailan Arrows at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on February 10.
