David Booth, the Salgaocar FC coach, was happy with his team’s performance after the Goan side snatched three points against a mighty Pune FC side with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

The win took them to 17 points as they have another eight matches more to go as they attempt to avoid the drop at the end of the season.

“The win was not an easy one. They (Pune FC) were very well organized and it is always difficult to beat them at home. They play in a certain style and it’s very effective. Fortunately, we got a couple of goals and we only tried to hang on to it. I’m very happy with the way my boys performed on the field,” said Booth.

The Greens have brought three new foreign players in the January transfer window, namely Gabriel Obatola, John Wilkinson and Josimar, and Booth stressed the fact that they were instrumental behind the performance of the team.

“You know, if we get decent foreigners then it helps a lot. But the local boys also played well. They moved around well today, exchanging the positions. I’m happy with the spirit of the Indian players. They were determined today and it was a good game for us,” he said.

Booth agreed that the victory over the Red Lizards shall go a long way in boosting his side’s confidence as they next face the Shillong Lajong challenge at home.

“We defeated Mohun Bagan and then played Sporting Clube de Goa. Believe me we should have gone three- or-four goals up in the first half. We got some brilliant chance, but couldn’t convert. Then we got punished in the second half (conceded two goals). Today we had a couple of good chances and we scored. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. The result has given us a fresh lifeline and we have to take the advantage next week,” he opined.

The Englishman seemed optimistic about avoiding the relegation as a win in the next tie shall take them to 20 points, which according to him, will put them closer to safety.

 “Well, I have always felt that we are capable of staying out of the relegation zone. But when you start losing matches and missing easy goals, it gets hard. Two wins in the last three games have certainly given us the boost. We now have a tough home match coming up against Lajong. If we can notch up a win in that fixture, we will reach the 20 point mark. That will be somewhat safe”, he signed off.
