Prayag United's Eelco Schattorie: I hope that Sangram Mukherjee will get selected into the national team soon

Prayag United's Eelco Schattorie: I hope that Sangram Mukherjee will get selected into the national team soon

After Prayag United had snatched three points against the Airmen, Schattorie talked about the aspects his team must improve upon...

As Prayag United thumped Air India 4-1 in an away match, Eelco Schattorie, the coach of the Kolkata side, was happy with the result but stressed that there are many aspects to improve upon.

“No, I am not very happy. That’s the difference between the press and the coach. We did have some moments in the game. But to be honest, Air India was a weak side and they didn’t play much pressing football. Now, that is not my problem. I am happy with the three points,” he said.

The Dutchman pointed a few areas which his side needs to work on especially when it comes to burying the chances created to score.

“If I see especially in the second half, I tried to warn my players about the lack of concentration. Though it was already 3-0, we got a yellow card for nothing. We lost a few balls in the second half and had moments near our goal.

“It has to do with mentality. Now, I think that is different between India and Europe. I try to teach my boys about professionalism. If you get the chance to score 10 goals, you must score all ten; not four of five. On the right side, there were a few chances,” the coach told.

Schattorie was also not happy with the team being reluctant to go into tackles at times and told that it is a problem around the globe.

“Gouramangi couldn’t play today because of his suspension. Anupam (Sarkar) played in place of him. I am not in favour of changing my defense, as it harms the stability. It is also part of professionalism that the defenders will not take it easy when the team has taken a good lead.”

Subrata Paul has been named in the Indian squad for the international friendly against Palestine even though he hasn’t started many games since the arrival of Schattorie at the helm of Prayag United.

“I do prefer Sangram (Mukherjee), but that is only about this moment. It is because he gives more stability to the team. But I hope Paul will stay with our team. Personally I believe that Subrata is technically a better keeper than Sangram. But Sangram is stronger in his basics. It is always difficult for a national coach to make the call. I hope that Sangram will get selected sometime soon,” he opined.

C.K.Vineeth, who earned his first call-up into the national squad, scored a hat-trick in the match and the coach agreed that he is one of the three players who have improved the most during his reign.

“I will name three. They are Lalkamal (Bhowmick), Vineeth and Kottayil Asif. He (Asif) is making great progress in the last few games”, the coach signed off.
