The former India U-23 coach feels that the country is not able to produce quality strikers because of the presence on foreigners in the league...Shillong Lajong FC coach Desmond Bulpin has voiced his opinion against lack of playing time being awarded to Indian players in the I-League.
The Scot also defended Lajong FC's Sushil Singh as the lanky striker is not one of the household names in Indian football.
"The problem with Indian football is that you keep bringing in strikers from Africa," said the 61-year-old.
"So Sushil Singh doesn't have a career when he goes to big clubs and never plays. So therefore, he doesn't get any practice.
"Even [Pune FC striker] Jeje [Lalpekhlua] at times doesn't play. So if you're an Indian striker and who doesn't play, you're not going to improve," he lamented.
"India has got some good young players in football, but you don't play? And that's where it's brave for coaches to play young Indians," he added.
Bulpin also reflected on his Lajong FC's last game against Sporting Clube de Goa which ended in a goalless draw, where Sushil Singh was denied the winner.
"I think we should have won it. One goal would have won the game either way. We started the better team and Sushil [Singh] gets the header, which should have been a certain goal from about two yards, but credit to the goalkeeper who saved it. [If] that would have gone in, we would have won the game," he said.
"At the end of the day, I think we were the better team and I think we deserved to win it because that chance came at the right time. Fair play to the other team who also played very hard and it was a good game."
Bulpin also conveyed his regards to Sporting Goa frontman Dawson Fernandes who got injured in the match. "I like the boy upfront - Dawson Fernandes. I like him. I hope he's not hurt, because I'm not like that. He's a good prospect for India. Talking about the young talent in India, as a center forward, he's quite a handful."
