I-League team of the round 14: Beto and Akram Moghrabi star as Churchill Brothers hit Shillong Lajong for six
Goal.com revisits all the action from week 14 of the Indian I-League and picks a team of the best performers...
Week 14 of the I-League witnessed some key battles and delivered some fascinating results that have reshaped both the top and bottom of the table. After two losses on the spin, Prayag United registered a surprise 1-0 home win against Dempo SC. Carlos Hernandez scored the only goal of the game in the final minute of regulation time from a free-kick. The result sees the hosts secure a morale boosting win and they are 6th with 17 points. Contrastingly, the Goan side continue their slide down the table and are in 4th position with 26 points, but are only 2 points off the top spot.
Churchill Brothers handed out a 6-0 hammering to a sorry Shillong Lajong side to go top of the table on goal difference. Steven Dias opened the flood gates on 40 minutes. Following his strike Henry Antchouet, Ajay Singh and Beto all got themselves on the score sheet, while substitute Akram Moghrabi helped himself to a brace. Mariano Dias’ men are now top on 28 points, although they have played a game more than the rest of the chasing pack. Meanwhile, the team from the northeast are languishing in 12th spot with 10 points.
Pune FC continued their impressive run of form with a 2-1 away win at United Sikkim. Arata Izumi put the visitors in front on 23 minutes before Nima Tamang equalised for the hosts just after the hour mark. However, James Moga scored the winner in injury time to seal the points for the Red Lizards. With the win Derrick Pereira’s men are in second place and level on points with Churchill Brothers, while United Sikkim are second from bottom with 9 points.
ONGC FC secured another important 3-0 home win against a lacklustre Pailan Arrows. The visitors got off to the worst possible start when Pritam Kotal put the ball into his own net on 6 minutes. Eric Brown doubled the Oilmen’s advantage on the half hour mark and Lalnun Puia wrapped up the points with a second half strike. The result sees Pailan Arrows extend their losing streak in the league to four games and are 7th with 14 points. On the other hand it’s now 7 points out of 9 for ONGC, as Santosh Kashyap’s men continue their march up the table and are 8th with 13 points.
East Bengal came from behind to win 4-1 at Salgaocar FC. Marcus Masceranhas gave the Goans an early lead but the Red and Gold hit back with a hat-trick from striker Edeh Chidi and a goal from Robin Singh. The result sees Trevor Morgan’s side secure their second win on the trot and are 3rd with 27 points, while David Booth’s men fail to build on last week’s victory and are 11th with 10 points.
Sporting Clube de Goa struck late to draw 1-1 with Air India. Elijah Obagbemiro Junior opened the Airmen’s account just after the half hour mark. Keita Boubacar was given his marching orders for a second indiscretion as the visitors were reduced to ten men. But, the Pilots failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage to put the result beyond doubt. They were made to pay when Victorino Fernandes popped up in second half injury time to rescue a point for the away side.
