The Scot highlighted that the Reds have remained a struggling side in the I-League but believes that they can do better...

Shillong Lajong FC coach Desmond Bulpin was left a dejected man after his side were thrashed 6-0 by Churchill Brothers SC in Goa, on Friday.

"I thought we were very good until the 40th minute," said the 61-year-old after the match. "I thought we did very well considering that I've got my [regular] right back, centre-back and goalkeeper out.

"We've got a very young squad and I missed the experienced players. Churchill Brothers are a very good side like East Bengal," he added.

Bulpin was dissatisfied by the margin of defeat but stressed that the north-eastern outfit have always remained a struggling side in the I-League.

"Since I joined this club, they're used to losing, aren't they? They are always losing. Last year they nearly got relegated. Year before they got relegated. Year before that, they came up [in the I-League]. So they're struggling," he continued.

"We were magnificent in the pre-season, beating the Australian A-League side and a lot of other sides, but we've had injuries from last year. Like today, I missed Govin [Singh] - well armoured centre-back. With the squad being so small, you know, I've got a problem."

The Lajong coach however admitted that the Goan opponents were the better side on the day while he was forced to field a team of inexperienced players.

"I'm not taking away anything away from the [Churchill] coach. The better side won. Quality comes through. You look at Man United or Man City win it as they've got the best players. So my job is pretty difficult," he claimed.

"With two 17-year-old players on the pitch, at the end of the day, we did quite well. Our budget is very small. We've got to pick all our boys from the north-east and I do the best with what we got, but we're better than that if we got a full team.

"There are no excuses as they were the better side. I thought we did well till the first goal. Then we fumbled a little bit and lost desire."

Talking about his substitutions in the match, Bulpin explained, "At that stage (down by two goals) I couldn't see us winning it and Renedy [Singh] is 34 years old. So I thought it was more sense to give a young one (Bipin Singh) a try and see what he was like so that Renedy can start in the next game.

"I also did the same with my right winger, as I said there were two genuine 17-year-old players. I thought the boy in the midfield (Jacob Lalrawngbawla) did very well."

Lajong FC will face another Goan outfit in Sporting Clube de Goa on Tuesday. Matches at the Duler stadium are scheduled to kick-off at 3.45 pm IST.
