East Bengal coach Trevor Morgan believes that his side should stick around at the top of the table or at least be within the touching distance of the league leaders in order to stay in contention for the league title.
The Red and Gold lead the league table with 17 points from seven outings with Dempo SC close behind with 16 points from as many games.
“It’s great to be on top of the table. However, we would always look to be within touching distance of the top, if not at the summit. Prayag earned a point (against Salgaocar FC) so we knew we had to play well. With so many teams near we always have to keep up pressure and perform. The best time to be on top of the table is at the end of the season!” said Morgan.
Against ONGC, East Bengal were in inspired form with Chidi Edeh, Manandeep Singh and Robin Singh on the scoresheet which shall certainly boost the confidence of the three strikers.
“Everybody was getting into the right positions. Yes, they were down to 10 men, but it’s never easy playing against a team with a man down. You have to apply yourself. We broke them down; on other days we might have failed. Look at the game against Sporting Clube de Goa. We could not score against them even when they had no foreigners. Every game is different,” he opined.
On being asked on the performance of his side, Morgan highlighted that after the opposition were a man down, his team made the most of the opportunity provided.
“ONGC were tight and organised in the first half making it difficult for us to play. When they had the man sent off, that was when we could capitalize. We found lots of space and more importantly we could take our foot off the pedal and just enjoy the game,” he said.
Naoba Singh was awarded as the man of the match and his coach expressed his surprise on the choice.
