United Spirits Limited's (USL) recent acquisition by British-based alcohol giants Diageo PLC has thrown doubts on its sponsorship of Kolkata club Mohun Bagan. United Breweries (UB) began sponsoring Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in 1998 after which they were renamed as McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal respectively.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the UB Group, Ravi Nedungadi revealed that the issue of sponsorship was yet to be discussed with Diageo.
"We have not discussed issues up to this level of business. At this point of time, neither can we confirm that Diageo will continue nor can we say that they will discontinue it. This will crystallize in the next few months. It depends on them," Nedungadi was quoted saying to The Times of India.
"Football is a major means of promoting your brand. This happens across the world. The company still exists, so I don't think there will be any problem," said Anjan Mitra, managing director of Mohun Bagan.
Nedangudi however stated that Diageo were aware of the sport assets of USL and the endorsement values of these assets for different brands like McDowell, Royal Challenge, Antiquity and others.
