One of the major reasons why teams from Kolkata haven’t won the I-League for several seasons has been due to exhaustion of their players as the clubs participate in several needless tournaments.

With the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) AD Hoc Committee for Indian Football suggesting that an I-League player mustn’t represent the clubs in local leagues in their last meeting, the AIFF pondered over implementing the same with vice-president Subrata Dutta, general secretary Kushal Das, I-League CEO Sunando Dhar and the technical director Colin Toal formed the constituents of the sub-committee. However the suggestions need to be ratified by the AIFF Executive Committee meeting.

The recommendation made has been to see to it that no player would play more than 40 matches in a season and given that I-League and Federation Cup would form a major chunk of it, the losers are the state leagues, Santosh Trophy, Durand Cup, IFA Shield and several such tournaments.

Also if the I-League and local leagues are simultaneously on, any player who has played in the former for more than 45 minutes wouldn’t be allowed to feature in the following state league game.

In what would certainly be disappointing news for teams who have several national team players, the committee came to the conclusion that during the SAFF Cup, which is to be held in India during December, the I-League wouldn’t come to a halt. This would mean that the teams who have signed several national team players this summer are bound to lose them for a minimum of five rounds which is a matter of 15 points.

Clubs will be allowed to register only three foreign players in any tournaments except for the I-League and the Federation Cup but two shall be permissible to play in a match.
