I-League: We Shall Appeal Against Our Relegation – Sporting Coach Viswas Gaonkar
Goan side not ready to accept relegation...
By Rahul Sengupta
Sporting Clube de Goa become the second team to get relegated from the I-league despite sealing 3 points from their away fixture against Chirag United. The Goan side required both Lajong and Mumbai FC to lose their respective matches, but since Mumbai FC beat Bagan, their hopes were dashed.
Sporting officials however, are miffed on the issue and have vowed to lodge an official protest with the All India Football Federation.
Goal.com caught up with Sporting Coach Vishwas Gaonkar to explain the situation.
Sharing his thoughts, Gaonkar said, “We are getting relegated because we finished 13h with 27 points. The team that finished 10th have just 3 points more than us. So the league was very competitive this time around. Moreover, one team in the form of Mahindra has already pulled out from the league so the decision for us to go down is injustice.”
Speaking on the issue of the AIFF fielding their own team in the I-league to replace the outgoing Mahindra United, he added, “It will be a waste to field a team of U-19 players. Moreover, our U-19 team has reached the U-19 league finals so let our team play in the I-League. We will surely sponsor the team.”
However, Gaonkar did admit that Sporting weren't performing well enough for most of the season.
“We did not perform well in the beginning of the season and our foreigners were not upto the mark. There were many collective reasons for the downfall", he signed off.
