I-League: Sporting Clube de Goa Hold East Bengal In Kolkata
Red and Gold captain Rahim Nabi scored the equaliser
By Rahul Sengupta
Joseph Pereira gave the Goans the lead after 11 minutes but East Bengal skipper equalized six minutes before the break.
East Bengal returned to I-League action after drawing their last two Kolkata League matches and suffering back to back defeats in the AFC Cup. They were missing the services of Subhash Singh and Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia due to injuries.
Sporting on the other hand, had a near full strength squad and were looking to bounce back from their hearbreaking last minute defeat against Dempo in the last round.
It was the hosts who went off to a flying start as within the first five minutes they got some good openings to score.
Abel Hammond’s shot was saved brilliantly by Sporting goalkeeper Felix and then moments later East Bengal's other Ghanaian Yusif Yakubu produced another fine save off Felix.
However against the run of play Sporting took the lead in the 11th minute when winger Joseph Pereira scored after reacting first to a rebound from a corner.
It was to be Sporting's only real chance of the first half as the home side dominated but failed to score with Nabi and Beikhokhei wasting very promising openings.
The red and gold brigade finally found the equalizer in the 41st minute when Syed Rahim Nabi found the back of the net with a very fine finish.
At halftime the score was 1-1 all thanks to the heroics of Sporting keeper Felix D'Souza.
The second half was a total dull affair as it seemed that both the teams were playing for a point.
Abel Hammond looked East Bengal's most bright player but he couldn't score or create any clear cut chance.
East Bengal coach De Ridder did bring on Alvito D'Cunha in place of skipper Nabi but the Goan was unable to make any real impact.
In the end the Flaming Oranje did more than enough to earn a valuable point away from home with goalkeeper Felix deservedly awarded the man of the match award.
The result still keeps Sporting rock bottom with only three rounds remaining but they are only three points off safety. While East Bengal move upto ninth spot but have two games in hand.
Goalscorers: Joseph Pereira (Sporting Clube de Goa) 11', Syed Rahim Nabi (East Bengal) 39'
