I-League: Ten-Man Sporting Triumph In Goa Derby Against Churchill
Flaming Oranje show character to emerge victorious...
By Atishay Agarwal
Both teams were missing one foreign striker, as Sporting started without Nathaniel Amos, while Churchill were without skipper Odafa Okolie. Agnelo D'Souza started up front alongside Junior for the Flaming Oranje, while young Durga Boro partnered Felix Chimaokwu.
The game didn't have a high tempo to it, as Churchill were dominant in midfield, but weren't creative enough up front. Sporting looked to play more on the break, soaking up the pressure. In fact, the only real chance in the first 15 minutes was when Durga Boro backheeled his shot wide from a corner ala Joe Cole against Manchester United.
The goal came about against the run of play as in the 19th minute, Agnelo D'Souza, who was a constant menace, sneaked past the Churchill backline into the box, and was brought down by Robert. The fullback was the last defender, but the referee only showed him a yellow card. There was no respite for Churchill from Junior though, as he smashed the penalty past Arindam to give his side the lead.
Churchill looked to respond, and hogged possession, but had no cutting edge in the final third, while Sporting were comfortable in defence.
Close to the half hour mark, Agnelo caused more problems, as he made the most of Rowilson's indecision to burst into the box, but with the angle against him, his shot towards the near post was saved easily by Arindam.
Churchill had a few speculative shots from distance, but the only real danger they posed was in the 44th minute, when Sporting failed to clear their lines well, and amidst the confusion, Lalindrika raced in to fire in a shot from 20 yards, which Felix parried out for a corner.
However, the chance of the half came in injury time, when some more casual defending by Gouramangi allowed the tenacious Agnelo to race into a one-on-one position, but Arindam saved superbly to his left to keep the score 1-0.
Churchill started the second half looking to force the pace, and sent in a few dangerous crosses into the box, but Vashum was the guilty party, as he failed to make connection more than once.
The defending champions then hit the woodwork in the 55th minute, when Ogba Kalu unleashed a fierce volley from 25 yards, which came back off the crossbar with Felix beaten. Carlos Pereira's side were seeing almost all of the ball, but still didn't look convincing enough, although they player better than in the first half.
Sporting again reminded Churchill of what they were capable of, when Junior ran free into the box to connect with a cross from the left, but his shot came back off the post. The striker collided with Arindam at the shot as the goalie came off his line, and the latter came off worse. Junior's knee hit his face, and an ambulance was required to take him off the pitch, although he came back on the sidelines 10 minutes later, looking dazed, but alright.
Lalit Thapa came on to replace Arindam, and his first task was to pick the ball out of his own net, although the goal was ruled out for offside. A low cross from the right was missed by Gouramangi, and even though Agnelo sneaked in to finish, he was offside.
However, the 85th minute offered Churchill a lifeline, as the referee adjudged Samananda Singh to have brought down Kalu inside the box, and sent him off for his second bookable offence. Replays showed that it was more a case of Kalu going over the defender's leg, but Felix Chimaokwu stepped up to convert the penalty, slotting high into the net past his namesake.
Churchill had three more minutes of regulation time and a large chunk of extra time to find the winner, but were stung by a superb strike from Junior in the 88th minute, which gave Sporting a 2-1 lead. The striker received the ball 25 yards out, took a few touches and fired a shot across Thapa, that went in off the post.
A stunning nine minutes of injury time were added on due to the stoppage during Arindam's injury, but Sporting held on bravely, and rather comfortably, as Churchill's poor domestic form continued. Sporting now will feel they have a real chance to fight for survival in the top division.
