I-League: Sporting Edge Past JCT In Goa To Record Third Win Of The Campaign
The Flaming Oranje are now just four points off safety
By Goal.com India
Midfielder Bisheshwor Singh scored the only goal of the game in the first half.
As early as the second minute, Sporting's top scorer Junior found himself in the JCT box and provided a brilliant pass for Agnelo D'Souza but the latter could not hit the target.
JCT had a couple of goal-mouth melees too but all of them were well averted by the Sporting defence which was well marshaled by Japanese recruit Kenji Arai.
The visitors had an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 21st minute when Penn Orji played in Okoro with a lovely through ball but Okoro's shot was well saved by Felix D'Souza.
Then finally in the 32nd minute, Bisheshwor Singh opened the scoring for the home side.
Bisheshwor got on the end of a low cross, after Narinder Singh had failed to make the clearance, and slotted the ball past Karanjit Singh.
Soon after, JCT tried to get one back as Penn bulldozed his way down the left left flank but his shot from a narrow angle was tipped away by Felix.
Sporting could have doubled their lead before the break when the in-form Adil Khan released Junior on the left but the Nigerian's shot was blocked by Karanjit Singh.
The pace of the game dropped down a couple of notches in the second half but Sporting continued to look the better side.
Within the first ten minutes of the second period Karanjit prdocued two fine saves to keep his side in the game. First he denied Junior from close range and then the India Under-23 international showed some fine reflexes to keep out Joseph Pereira's goalbound effort.
JCT had to wait until the 70th minute to create their first real chance of the second half when Baljit Sahni's long range effort produced a fine save off Felix.
In the closing stages Bisheshwor could have scored the second but Karanjit came to JCT's rescue again with another top class save.
Substitute Stanley Samuel did beat Karanjit but the cross bar saved JCT's blushes.
Sporting could have easily won by a bigger margin but in the end they had to settle for a 1-0 win which moves them within four points of 13th placed Shillong Lajong.
This is JCT's third consecutive defeat, which keeps them in ninth place and only a point above the bottom two.
