I-League: Sporting Secure Second Victory Of The Season As Junior's Brace Downs Salgaocar
Flaming Oranje regain some pride after winning local derby.
By Rahul Sengupta
Playing at the Fatorda, both sides were without any major injury worries, and Salgaocar, who were fresh from their impressive 4-1 victory against East Bengal, were favourites as the game kicked off.
The first half was a scrappy affair as the heat was taking a toll on the players. Both sides were playing for regional pride, but above all, they were both playing to avoid the drop from the country’s premier football league.
Surprisingly, it was Vishwas Gaonkar’s side who took the lead deep into the first half, as Nigerian striker Elijah Junior produced a moment of individual brilliance to put the Flaming Oranje one up just before the half time break.
Salgaocar tried hard to stage a strong comeback, with Ekene Ikenwa and Mandjou Keita trying hard to put their team on level terms, but it was their bottom-placed opponents who scored the second on a counter attack.
Adil Khan scored his second of the campaign in the 57th minute to double the lead for his team. Adil had also scored against Mohun Bagan a few days back.
Salgaocar though, continued to look dangerous going forward, and were difficult to handle as Sporting players were finding it hard to contain their strong attacking force. Salgaocar finally got some reward for their efforts in the 74th minute, when Keita scored from close range to halve the deficit.
However, things turned sour for Salgaocar soon, as Iranian defender Saminia was shown a red card after he was found handling the ball inside the penalty area.
Junior stepped up and sent the ball past Kalyan Chaubey to seal the match in Sporting's favour, only their second win of the season.
With this win Sporting remain 14th in the league with 14 points in their kitty, while Salgaocar are 10th with 21 points. Salgaocar shall next face Mohun Bagan in Kolkata.
