Dempo SC are no more the league leaders though it’s so only on goal difference. In the second phase of the I-League, the Goan club has dropped six points from a possible nine and thus, allowed Mahindra United to have an edge over them.

They started with a win over Mumbai FC which by no means was easy as the 3-2 scoreline suggested. What followed next was the shocking defeat to Viva Kerala and to term the loss to Salgaocar as a ‘surprise’ would be an understatement.

“Of course, the defeat to Viva Kerala affected us against Salgaocar too. I don’t want to blame anyone as in football, if you win it’s everybody and when you lose its everybody again. However, it’s necessary that we stay careful at the back,” said Ranti Martins.

Injuries have now become synonymous with Dempo this season as there are always several players in the treatment room. While a player recovers, there is another one who has to be helped off the field.

“This season, we have had a lot of injuries. Players have been coming in and out. It’s affecting other teams as well. This has made it more difficult for us as I just hope that the youngsters coming in would do a good job,” said the Nigerian.

With Sunil Chhetri already been released by Dempo, the former I-League champions would need to find a way to score goals in the remaining ten games in their bid to win the I-League.

"We don’t have any foreign strikers except me. The young ones coming in would have to be on top of their game, which wouldn’t be easy. I hope they can gear themselves up and help us get the results.”

Dempo next faces a tough challenge in the form of Churchill Brothers and Ranti believes that the match would be tough.

“We know each other very well. It’s a derby where sometimes the better team loses and that is football. Having said this, I know that we need a victory and shall do everything to achieve it.”
