I-League: Late Goal From Hiralal Chettri Denies Sporting First Win Of The Season
The Flaming Oranje are still winless...
By Goal.com India
Mumbai took the lead in the first half through Nishant Mehra but Joseph Pereira equalised for the Goans. Junior Elijah gave Sporting the lead in the second period but the bottom placed side couldn't hold on for the win.
Hosts Sporting started the game very strongly and had good chances in the early stages but once again the finishing from their forwards was disappointing.
Against the run of play, Mumbai FC took the lead in the 10th minute when some fine interplay between Nishant Mehra and Abhishek Yadav saw the former get into a good position in the box from where he slotted the ball past Sporting keeper Felix D’ Souza.
Despite conceding Sporting continued to play and did find the equalizer in the 22nd minute when winger Joseph Pereira found the back of the net from close range after Mumbai custodian Nidhinlal had initially saved Bibiano Fernandes’ powerful shot.
Sporting were dominating proceedings in midfield but were struggling to create clear cut opportunities. On the other hand Khalid Jamil’s side were happy to go into the break all square.
Vishwas Gaonkar’s side went ahead for the first time in the game midway through the second half when Nathaniel Amos setup substitute Junior Elijah, who scored with a very cool finish.
The Flaming Oranje started to believe that they could get their first win of the season as Mumbai struggled to create openings.
But two minutes from time a shot from Alex Ambrose which was well saved by Felix D’ Souza fell to the feet of Hiralal Chettri, who netted the equalizer from close range to break Sporting hearts.
The game ended in a 2-2 draw much to the disappointment of the home fans.
Sporting remain winless and rock bottom with only seven points from 15 matches while Mumbai are placed just outside the top half in eighth spot.
Goalscorers: Nishant Mehra (Mumbai FC) 10’, Joseph Pereira (Sporting Clube de Goa) 22’, Junior Elijah (Sporting Clube de Goa) 68’, Hiralal Chettri (Mumbai FC) 88’
