I-League: Dempo Come From Behind Against Mumbai FC To Retain Pole Position
Goans win in entertaining clash...
Goal.com India
Dempo came back from a goal down and grabbed a 3-2 win at the Fatorda Stadium against a spirited Mumbai FC side on Thursday, retaining top spot in the I-League table. Abhishek Yadav gave Mumbai the lead in the 23rd minute from the spot, but Anwar equalized soon after. Ranti Martins then scored twice in the second half, and although Yadav scored once more in injury time, it was too late to try and score a third. Anwar was named Man of the Match.
Mumbai FC have recovered well after a stuttering start to their league season, showing a lot of fight in midfield and defence when put under pressure, and they did more of the same as the game started.
They soaked up the pressure before hitting Dempo on the break, as Abhishek Yadav won a penalty in the 23rd minute after John Dias brought him down. Yadav, who is Mumbai's top scorer this season, coolly converted the spot kick to give the visitors the lead.
However, Dempo have responded quickly to goals in recent games, and they did so again, as defender Anwar Ali equalized just four minutes later. Valeriano Rebello notched up another assist as he floated in a free kick form the right, and Anwar sneaked his header just inside the far post.
Ranti Martins was making his come back from an injury layoff, and he was making his presence felt, as he struck a powerful effort against the bar, before smashing a long-range effort just over the goal.
However, only three minutes into the second half, Ranti finally got his goal, after Anas handled the ball in the Mumbai penalty area. The Nigerian stepped up and converted the spot kick, giving Dempo a 2-1 lead.
The Goans seized the initiative thereafter, as Ranti continued to cause the Mumbai defence all sorts of problems, as another effort of his fizzed over the bar. Supersub Nicolau Borges also fired in a piledriver from distance, but it was parried over.
Martins, though, refused to let up, and scored his second of the game to seal the tie for Dempo in the 90th minute, as he turned in Anthony Pereira's curling cross.
Mumbai though, are not a team that lies down in front of the opposition, and they pushed forward, getting one back deep into injury time through Abhishek Yadav to make it 3-2, but it was too late for the away side to force an equalizer.
The entertaining match, which Dempo won deservedly, sees the Goans open up a four-point gap at the top over second-placed Mahindra, while Mumbai remain 8th in the league, a point ahead of JCT.
