After threatening in the early stages, Dempo finally took the lead in 20th minute when Clifford Miranda headed home a John Dias cross.

The three time champions doubled their advantage nine minutes later when India Under-23 international Joaquim Abranches fired a shot past Sporting keeper Luis Barreto.

Dempo were cruising at that stage until Bisheswor Singh pulled one back for Sporting in the 36th minute. The midfielder received a pass from Joseph Pereira after a deflection off Mahesh Gawli and coolly found the back of the net.

There were no more goals in the first half but Dempo were looking dangerous going forward.

The first and only goal of the second half came in the 61st minute when Peter Carvalho headed in a corner from Clifford Miranda. It was Carvalho’s second goal in as many matches.

Dempo continued to be the better side but couldn’t add to their tally while Sporting struggled to create clear cut chances.

The result sends Dempo to the top with a two point lead over second placed Mahindra but Vishwas Gaonkar’s Sporting side continue to occupy the bottom position and have now lost half of their matches this season.

Goalscorers:  Clifford Miranda (Dempo) 20’, Joaquim Abranches (Dempo) 29’, Bisheswor Singh (Sporting Clube de Goa) 36’, Peter Carvalho (Dempo) 61’
