Chirag United and Dempo played out a slightly dull 1-1 draw at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Wednesday, with Edmilson Marques' stunning free kick cancelling out Peter Carvalho's header. Both goals were scored in the second half of an otherwise uneventful match. As a result, Mahindra remain top of the league.

A top of the table clash always comes with a surprise, and Chirag United coach did just that by starting with defender Arnab Mondal despite having Kingshuk Debnath in the team list.

Dempo on the other hand fielded a full Indian squad with no foreigner in their ranks. Key players Anwar Ali and Valeriano Rebello were left out of the team.

After 15 mins of sloppy football the first chance came for Dempo when Climax Lawrence delivered a wonderful corner to see the unmarked Joachim Abranches shoot above the cross bar. The move initiated by Dempo suddenly seemed to have brought Chirag back into life as Ashim Biswas led the team from Kolkata to a wonderful chance, but cross was well intercepted by Mahesh Gawli as Edmilson was in a good postion to score from inside the box.

Just minutes after, Chirag again got a chance when Subhashis Roychoudhury provided an excellent cross for Edmilson but his header went wide, and failed to trouble the Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal.

With a barren first half, both teams went into the breather without showing any real intention or invention to win the match and go top of the League table.

The second half was a different story altogether, with both teams starting to play open football. Many chances came for Dempo as well as Chirag but nothing special came of them until the crucial opener came along in the 59th minute.

Dempo had won a corner, and Clifford Miranda sent in a beautiful delivery which midfielder Peter Carvalho headed past Chirag Goalkeeper Somnath Khara. The home defnece looked clueless as defenders Arnab Mondal and Subhashis Roychoudhury did nothing but stare at the goalscorer, who was in the side because of Beto's absence.

Chirag came back strongly when a foul by Dempo's goalscorer, Carvalho, saw him get booked, and conceded a freekick just outside the box. Edmilson stepped up for the setpiece, and scored a stunning goal, curling the ball into the back of the net to restore parity.

With the scoreline at 1-1, both the teams never looked like taking the bull by the horns as both coaches made numerous substituions to run down the clock. One final chance came for Dempo when a foul on Sunil Chhetri had won them a freekick in a good postiion, but Climax Lawrence failed to do anything worth while.

Edmilson was adjudged the Man of the Match. Dempo remain in second place for the time being, while Chirag overtake Churchill into third.

Goalscorers:

Dempo: Peter Carvalho (59')

Chirag United: Edmilson Marques (66')
