I-League: Goan Derby Sees Churchill Held Again
The champions drop points again...
Goal.com India
I-League champions Churchill Brothers were held to a goalless draw by local rivals Sporting Clube de Goa at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday, in a result that will disappoint Carlos Pereira's side. Sporting lift themselves to 12th place, although Viva Kerala will overtake them if they get anything out of their game against JCT. Sporting keeper Luis Barreto was the Man of the Match, after making some wonderful saves.
As has been the story of their season so far, Churchill Brothers looked comfortable in second gear for most of the first half, as Sporting opted for a cautious approach, and their backline held up well against the likes of Odafa Okolie.
The back four did well for Sporting Clube de Goa, who negotiated whatever little Churchill had to offer in the first half easily enough, and entered the break with tie still goalless.
After the disappointing first half, the champions looked much more purposeful in the second half, with Odafa looking dangerous, and as usual, their best bet to score a goal. However, Sporting looked much more determined than in recent times at the back, and thwarted most of Churchill's opportunities.
Also, when required, goalkeeper Luis Barreto stepped up to the plate and made some fine saves, which earned him the Man of the Match award. The closest Churchill could come to breaking the deadlock was midway through the second half, when Odafa, who played a one-two with Kalu, struck the woodwork with his left-footer.
However, that was to be as close as Carlos Pereira's side would get, as Sporting held on for a very valuable point, that lifted them off the bottom of the table. For Churchill, it was another disappointing result, and their sixth draw in ten games.
They move into third place with the result, leapfrogging Chirag United, who will play Dempo on Tuesday.
