I-League: Banning Barasat Won't Help Too Much - Churchill's Arindam Bhattacharya

If the on-flight controversy wasn't enough, Churchill Brothers' eventful week got even more controversial after the Mohun Bagan game at the Barasat Stadium, when missiles were hurled from an enraged Bagan-supporting crowd after the final whistle, which caught Churchill midfielder Kalu.

The Goan side's goalkeeper, Arindam Bhattacharya, got involved with the crowd as he went after the person who threw the stone at Kalu, and has since been show-caused by the AIFF.

Speaking to Goal.com, the young lad said, "The match got over and these fans were throwing stones, which caught Kalu in the back. They were also abusing me, so it wasn't a pretty sight."

Choosing his words cautiously after the AIFF showcaused him, the goalkeeper added, "Yes the showcause notice is with the club. I haven't seen the letter myself, and I would like not to talk much about this issue till it is resolved.

"I don't know much about when and what I am to do, and the club will intimate me on the topic when needed."

The AIFF announced that the Barasat Stadium will not host any I-League matches after the incident, but Arindam was not sure if that was the way to solve this problem, which has plagued football in Kolkata for quite some time.

"See, the same problems have come up at the Salt Lake Stadium, and at Bagan's club ground, so I'm not sure banning the stadium will help much. The same fans will come to those grounds as well. The main problem is security. There were many officers there that day, but they weren't alert enough, and didn't help the cause", he explained.

Moving onto Churchill's next game, a Goa derby against Sporting Clube de Goa, he admitted it wasn't going to be an easy game by any stretch of imagination.

"Just because they're bottom doesn't mean it's going to be easy for us. Both the teams know each other well, so it's going to be a tough and hard-fought game", he signed off.
