I-League: When Arindam Bhattacharya Had A Cantona Moment...

Arindam’s ‘Eric Cantona’ moment...

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is well-known for his infamous “Kung-Fu” kick directed at a Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons after the latter used threatening language. This was while the Frenchman was escorted out of the pitch after being sent-off for a kick on Crystal Palace defender Richard Shaw as he pulled Cantona’s jersey.

Cantona was later banned for nine months from world football and had to pay a fine of £10,000 in addition to 120 hours of community service. On the other hand, Simmons was arrested and paid a  £500 fine, and was also banned from the attending matches in England stadiums for a year.

On Friday, Mohun Bagan fans lost their cool and began to hurl stones following the 2-2 draw against Churchill Brothers. One of the stones hit Kalu Nnanna and that midfielder had to be carried on the shoulders of Odafa to the dressing room.

Arindam Bhattacharya spotted the wrongdoer and charged on to the stands to confront the fan. The Indian international was surrounded by the miffed fans, who had every intention to hurt.

Speaking to Goal.com, the player in question said, “It is so dangerous to organise matches in such places. The IFA (Indian Football Association) must look into the matter as the players are becoming easy targets.

“Around five-to-six hundred policeman inside the stadium were watching the game and didn’t bother to control the angry supporters.”

It is believed that the match commissioner happened to give the post-game “action” a miss and the report to be sent to the Indian FA would be based on what the eyewitnesses said. Barasat has been in the wrong reasons for the last two seasons especially after Vasco and Mumbai FC were targeted last season in the Federation Cup and the I-League respectively.

But it’s unfair to only point Barasat as such incidences have also taken place at the Salt Lake Stadium this season when JCT visited the Bengal capital and at Mohun Bagan ground when Mahindra United’s Subashish Chowdhary was lucky not to hurt his eye.

The issue is that when the Indian FA confronts the home side over the misbehaviour of their fans, their plain reply is that they aren’t playing on their club ground. It’s high time that the clubs become accountable and stricter rules must be in place in order to avoid such embarrassing incidences, which only bring down the profile of Indian football.

It also must be noted that Mohun Bagan had requested to play their matches on their ground but the move was rejected by the Indian FA.
