I-League: India Under-19 Goalkeeper Gurpreet Sandhu Signs For East Bengal
The red and goal brigade have signed India's Under-19 goalkeeper
Seeking an immediate solution to the goalkeeping worries at East Bengal, coach Phillipe De Ridder has offered a contract to 18 year old young goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
Born in Chandigarh, this six feet four inches goalkeeper caught the attention of the national selectors while playing for Chandigarh in the Mir Iqbal Trophy.
Gurpreet performed well in the recently concluded AFC Under-19 qualifiers, where he played against teams like Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Iraq.
Speaking to Goal.com Gurpreet expressed, “I am very confident about my stint with East Bengal. For the first time in my life, I am in a professional football club so I have to put in more effort from now on.
“I was not aware of the huge fan following which East Bengal club has. Earlier I had just read about it in newspapers and pretty soon I will get to experience it so I am sure it will motivate me.
Sharing his views about the current goalkeeping problem in East Bengal he said, "I have heard from my seniors in the team that the goalkeepers in the team are not at their best at present.
"This gives me an opportunity to step up and make my way into the starting eleven.”
East Bengal coach Philip De Rider also shared his thoughts about the young goalkeeper.
Speaking to Goal.com the Belgian coach said, "Gurpreet is young, energetic and very talented. I am sure with time he will impress us more.”
When asked whether Gurpreet will be in the starting line up for East Bengal in the upcoming matches he said, "It is too early to take a decision, he has just trained with us for three days.”
