I-League: Sporting Look To Japanese To Solve Their Defensive Woes

A Japanese force has been added to the brittle Sporting backline...

The Japanese Are Sporting, Aren't They? Sporting Clube De Goa's Latest Signing Kenji Arai
Lying second from bottom after seven matches, Sporting Clube De Goa totally lost the plot in the I-League this season as their famed defence from last season didn’t put up even an average performance. The Goan side have conceded as many as 13 goals so far as compared to the miserly 20 last season.

Kenji Arai with years of experience in the S-League joined the ranks of the Flaming Oranje from Singapore Armed Forces FC.

“The Club President Peter Vaz, the Vice President Victor Fernandes, the coach Roy Baretto and all the players have been very good to me since my arrival and have made me feel very welcome. I would like to thank them and my agents Raul Fernandes and Mirko for giving me this opportunity to play for Sporting in this beautiful State of Goa. I shall do my best to help the team in achieving high laurels in the football field,” said Arai.

India isn’t new for the 31 year old as he has played at the Fatorda Stadium back in 2007 against Mahindra United in an AFC Cup match.

Having defended against the likes of former World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho, what Kenji brings to Sporting is unrivalled experience. At his previous club, he won the S-League on four occasions and Singapore Cup twice. With his new club not having won the I-League as yet, the Japanese would hope to instil his winning mentality at the club.

“Kenji’s consistent defensive performances have been vital to SAFFC winning the S-League title 4 years in a row. He is a tall, strong defender who also scores goals at set pieces,” informed Arai’s agent Mirko to Goal.com.
