I-League CEO Profile: Sunando Dhar

One of the candidates for the post of I-League’s CEO spoke to Goal.com...

Sunando Dhar is one of the unknown entities for the football fraternity across the nation and revealed more about himself to cast away the ignorance of his identity from people’s mind.

“I have worked with Leisure Sports Management(LSM), which is the oldest sports management firm in India, for the last 13 years. We have been marketing and managing various sports properties and along came this opportunity (I-League’s CEO). The AIFF is one of the biggest sports federations in India and when I heard they were taking applications, I decided to give it a shot,” said Dhar.

Leisure Sports Management is the brainchild of Sabyasachi Dasgupta, who is known to have been a close associate of former Indian FA president Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, and played a major role in the opening Nehru Cup tournament way back in 1982.

Football in India is at an interesting stage where the average Indian is taking a keen interest in the sport but is more glued to the European Leagues and is unaware of the game in his country. How do we get them to follow the I-League?

“It’s all about how you promote and package. I’m sure in future you’ll see the Indian players being recognised. I am not saying that someone who watches Manchester United will stop it completely and watch Mahindra United but he’ll watch both Manchester United and Mahindra United. The two tastes can co-exist,” explained the general manager, sales and marketing of LSM.

On being queried as to what would be his greatest challenge if he does land in the post of I-League’s CEO, Dhar spoke of the need to propagate football.

“Football is one of the most popular games in the country. But presently, it’s being played in few selected pockets. The greatest challenge is to spread the game and make it a more national sport.”

Dhar is an Economics graduate and thereafter joined LSM with whom he has been working ever since.
