I-League: Sporting Hold High-Flying Chirag To A Draw
Sporting Clube de Goa are still bottom of the league...
A late equalizer from Nathaniel Amos meant that Sporting Clube de Goa earned a point against Chirag United in Goa today, after Edmilson had given the the visitors the lead in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot, but Amos saved the home team from what could have been their fourth defeat in five league games with an equalizer two minutes later. Joseph Pereira was named Man of the Match.
The match started on an even note with neither side dominating the proceedings. Sporting though started getting hold of the game but the first chance of the game fell to Chirag when Denson picked up a long ball from Arnab Mondaland and fed Josimar who volleyed first time but Luis Baretto made a good save.
On the other side Chirag keeper made two good saves first from Rowan Periera and then Bisheshwor Lairenjam. Sporting keeper Luis Baretto was having a good first game since replacing regular Felix D'Souza. At the end of the first half he made a fine save from Josimar of a Gourango Biswas's corner.
Chirag had a fine opportunity to break the deadlock as soon as the second half began when Luis Barreto failed to intercept a Denson long pass and as Edmilson tried to guide the ball Gomes was alert enough to clear the ball.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 83rd minute when Edmilson was brought down by Rojen inside the box, who conceded a penalty along with a yellow card.
The Sporting players were furious with the decision as they argued that there was contact with the ball. Edmilson scored but had to retake it as Baretto had come off his line. But he scored in the second attempt to take a lead.
However within two minutes Sporting equalized through Amos. Sporting broke with Freeman on the right who crossed and found Joseph coming in from the left. Joseph penetrated and found Amos who calmly slotted it home.
The game ended with last five minutes played in balance and no real chance created from either side for a winner. Chirag remain second in the table, and Sporting are still bottom, without a win in five games.
