I-League: Mahindra United Left Frustrated By The Poor Refereeing Decisions
The Mahindra United camp was livid with their thoughts on the officiating...
The Jeepmen were held to a 0-0 draw against JCT over the weekend in an away match but it was the referee Debjit Das who hogged all the headlines for being the ‘star performer!’
While in the first session, he disallowed a penalty for the visitors, he went on to book Denzil Franco reportedly for a challenge which never was. If this was not enough, what followed incensed Mahindra United bench even further.
“Muritala was almost through and in a one-on-one situation when one of their boys pulled him down from behind. The linesman (Dinesh Nair) raised his flag but the referee said play on. After twenty to thirty seconds later, he spoke to the linesman and decided to give his a free-kick at least eight to ten yards away from where it should have been.
“It was the linesman who once again asked for the ball to be moved forward,” illustrated David Booth.
While the Englishman is known not to lose his cool very often, that wasn’t the case on Saturday when the above mentioned incidents took place.
“I feel that the referee must be ashamed of himself. Such referees mustn’t be allowed to officiate an I-League game. We kept a clean sheet and the referee spoiled the game for us. He has to be fair and must know how to deal. When a player pulls down, he deserved a red.”
It’s been a hat-trick unfortunate decisions being given against the Red Devils as it’s the match official who often wears the devil’s hat against them.
“We have been suffering for the last three games. It’s high time that the referees are being held accountable. The match commissioner is there but they have to mention it in their report. Don’t treat the referees like God.
“This is beyond acceptance and has tested our patience limits,” said the Englishman.
Henry Menezes, the Mahindra United general manager, agreed with his coach and acknowledged that the refereeing errors were costing his side dear.
“The matches are tough and while the players are being consistent, such errors have been putting us down. In the Premier League, if a referee gives a horrendous decision, he is instantly demoted as it happened recently in a Liverpool game in the famous balloon incident.
“It’s time we act tough and make the referees responsible,” said Menezes.
