I-League: Pune Denied First Win By Late Anthony Pereira Goal
The league leaders scored late to earn one away point....
Goan giants Dempo came from behind to hold newly promoted Pune FC to a 1-1 draw at Balewadi Sports Complex, Pune on Sunday evening.
Izumi Arata put the home side ahead six minutes from time but Indian international Anthony Pereira equalised for the table toppers at the start of injury time.
Pune failed to win any of their previous four matches so were determined to get maximum points from this. In the first half they did a good job to restrict Dempo to very few attacks.
The Goan side were not finding easy to get their passing game going while hosts Pune were playing with full of confidence in front of their fans.
Derrick Pereira’s team showed more ambition in the second period but were not able to create too many clear cut chances.
Dempo also couldn’t create too many openings and as the game went on, a goalless draw looked the most likely scoreline.
But it all changed six minutes from time when a goal kick from Subrata Paul started a fine team move which ended in a goal for the home side as PIO Izumi Arata found the back of the net after getting on the end of a pass from Edmar.
Pune were minutes away from their first three minutes of the season but Anthony Pereira capitalized on some confusion between defenders Selwyn Fernandes and Caitano Costa to slot the ball past keeper Subrata Paul.
The crowd at the Balewadi Sports Complex was silenced by that goal as Pune once again dropped two points at home.
Pune’s fourth consecutive draw lifts them up to eighth place while Dempo could only extend their lead at the top to one point which means Kolkata’s Chirag will go top if they beat Sporting Clube de Goa on Monday.
Goalscorers: Izumi Arata (Pune FC) 84’, Anthony Pereira (Dempo) 90’
