I-League: It's Important Not To Lose The Next Three Games - Churchill's Gouramangi Singh

You Can't Get Past Me: Churchill's Gouramangi Singh Blocks Mahindra's Mohammed Rafi (Mango Peel)
Churchill Brothers, so to say, have been one of the disappointments after five rounds of games as they have failed to live up to the billing. After the just hype around their team for winning the IFA Shield and the Durand Cup at the expense of Mohun Bagan, Churchill Brothers looked favourites to defend their I-League title.

Yes, they weren’t at their best but in football, at the end of the day it’s the results which matter unless you are an Arsenal or a Barcelona fan where the style is equally important.

They didn’t have their first team members due to injuries and suspension but that has been the case with several other teams as well like Dempo and Mohun Bagan. Squad depth was always going to be concern for the Goan giants as they don’t have substitutes who can match the quality of the first XI.

Gouramangi Singh, a key cog in their team, feels that his side must finish the first phase of the I-League without losing any of the three games left.

“Somehow, if you look back, I see that we need some luck. We didn’t play very bad against JCT as we created many chances but weren’t able to convert.

“I was speaking to fellow players and just discussing on our recent run of results. We have been fighting but we need some luck to get the three points. It’s important not to lose from here,” said the India international.

Churchill drew with Mahindra United away on the opening day, went onto win against Viva where they lost two players on suspension, the following the referee gave a reportedly dubious penalty which saw them sharing the points with Mumbai FC and then the away trip to JCT where the game was amongst equals and they need a deflected effort to came back with a point.

In their last game against Pune FC, a goalkeeping blunder coupled with lack of finishing saw the I-League champions having to be content with a point.

“I believe we must end the first phase by being somewhere in the top five. Towards the end, it’s about getting into the top gear and find your way to the top. It’s important to keep working,” said Gouramangi.

Churchill next faces Air India at the Cooperage, league leaders Dempo and in-form Chirag United in Goa in their coming three matches.
