I-League: Team Of The Week - Round 4
Goal.com India looks at all those who impressed in Round 4 of the I-League....
Best XI
Formation: 3-4-3
Goalkeeper
Subhashish Chowdhury (Mahindra United)-GK- India’s number two keeper denied Dempo on several occasions with some fine saves as his defence struggled all game especially after Ravanan got sent off in the first half.
Defenders
Surkumar Singh (Mohun Bagan)-RB- The Indian international setup Bagan’s equalizer with a superb run from the back on the right flank. He was partly at fault for conceding East Bengal’s third but was solid as a rock in the second half.
Gurwinder Singh (JCT)-CB- The JCT defender was outstanding against Churchill as he defended brilliantly against Odafa and co. and prevented them from scoring until the late stages of the game.
Safar Sardar (Chirag United)-LB- In the absence of two foreign defenders, Subrata Bhattacharya had to field an all Indian back four and Safar Sardar was the star of that defence that kept a clean sheet to clinch top spot.
Midfielders
Steven Dias (Mahindra United)-RM- Dias gave ten-man Mahindra the lead after converting a Svetozar Mijin pass and looked in fine touch throughout the match. The Indian international's performance helped the Mumbai outfit to comeback after being a goal and man down at the break.
Shanmugham Venkatesh (Pune FC)-CM- The former India captain produced a vintage performance against Mumbai FC as he scored one and was easily Pune’s best player in the match.
Daniel Bedemi (Shillong Lajong)-CM- The former Chirag player has been used to good effect as a defensive midfielder by Lajong this season. He scored the opener in the 3-0 win over Air India and was influential for the entire game.
Anthony Barbosa (Salgaocar)-LM- Barbosa played a key role in Salgaocar’s first win of the season as he created the first and third goal. He created lots of chances for the strikers and looked dangerous on the left flank.
Forwards
Baljit Sahni (JCT)-RF- Baljit has been one of the best players in this season’s I-League and he continued his good form against champions Churchill by scoring a fine goal which now makes him the joint topscorer along with Mahindra’ Muritala Ali with five goals.
Eneke Ikenwa (Salgaocar)-CF- The Nigerian bagged a brace in the 3-2 win and caused problems for the Sporting defence throughout the match. Salgaocar’s survival in the league will depend heavily on his goal scoring ability.
Edeh Chidi (Mohun Bagan)-LF- Chidi didn’t manage a single goal in the first three matches despite getting so many opportunities but made up for it by scoring four in his derby debut to set a new record.
Special Mentions:
Karanjit Singh (GK, JCT)- He was in fine form against Churchill and was unfortunate to concede from a deflection late in the game.
Arnab Mondal (CB, Chirag United)- The young defender formed a good partnership with Safar Sardar which helped Chirag to keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Viva Kerala.
Penn Orji (CM, JCT)- JCT’s only foreigner has made a very good start and that was evident in a powerful performance against Churchill.
Reisangmi Vashum (RM, Churchill Brothers)- Vashum was brilliant against JCT and so fittingly scored the all important equalizer.
Marcos Pereira (CM, Mohun Bagan)- Chidi made all the headlines for scoring four in the derby but it was Marcos who did all the dirty work in front of the Bagan backfour and helped them keep a clean sheet in the second half.
Renedy Singh (RM/LM, East Bengal)- The Indian international once again came up with two assists in the derby but it wasn’t enough as his team lost 3-5.
Ranti Martins (FW, Dempo)- Ranti converted the penalty to give Dempo the lead and was unlucky not to score more as he was denied by Subhashish Chowdhury on several occasions.
