I-League: It Is The Best Moment Of My Career - Edeh Chidi

The Nigerian was ecstatic after making history in the derby win over East Bengal....

After failing to score in four consecutive matches, Edeh Chidi scored four in Mohun Bagan’s 5-3 win against arch rivals East Bengal.

In the 84 year old rivalry between the two Kolkata giants only Bhaichung Bhutia managed to score a hat-trick and that was in the 1997 Federation Cup semi final when East Bengal defeated Mohun Bagan 4-1.

Nigerian Chidi bettered that feat of the Indian captain by scoring four and that too in his derby debut. He came to know about his feat only after the match and was delighted to make history.

Speaking to Goal.com he said, “Before the match I didn’t know much about the record but after it when everybody was congratulating me, they told me that I am the first player to score four in this derby.

“It’s a great feeling to make history but more importantly my efforts helped my team win an important match so I am very happy.

“It is by far the best moment in my football career.”

Chidi then stated that the derby win will inspire Mohun Bagan to do well in the coming matches. He is confident about his team’s title challenge and personally is aiming to be the league’s top scorer.

“It was very important for us to win against East Bengal. We have won two on the trot now so we have to keep going and aim for consistency.

“We definitely have the ability to win the title so all we have to do is keep winning every game.

“From my side I will try to give my best in every game and help the team in whatever way I can. Personally I want to score many more goals and maybe also finish as the topscorer.”

The Nigerian admitted that after this performance he is likely to become a fan favorite and dedicated his performance to his every well wisher.

“The fans at Mohun Bagan are great and I think after this performance they will support me even more.

“I have struggled for goals in the last few matches but I have always kept trying and even when I am not able to score I try to provide other teammates.

“As a player one can only dream of a day like the one I had today. I would like to dedicate it to my family, friends and of course my teammates, coach, fans and everyone who is associated with Mohun Bagan.”

Chidi will be looking to continue his goal scoring exploits in Mohun Bagan’s next game against Shillong Lajong on Thursday 29th October.
