I-League: Team Of The Week - Round 1
Goal.com India looks at all those who impressed in Round 1 of the 09/10 I-League....
Abhra Mondal (East Bengal)-GK- Not too many goalkeepers
were impressive in the first round but East Bengal’s
young custodian was their best player in the 0-0 draw against Pune FC. Mondal
came to the Kolkata club’s rescue on several occasions with some brilliant
saves and made sure that they keep a clean sheet.
Naoba Singh (Churchill Brothers)-RB- The young fullback looks set to have another fine season after a brilliant all round performance in the first game . Naoba kept the left side of Mahindra fairly quiet and set up Dan Ito’s goal by providing a delightful cross.
Dhanraj Ravanan (Mahindra United)-CB- The former Mohun Bagan center half was the leader of the Mahindra back four which did an excellent job against a powerful Churchill attack. His experience helped defensive partner Kali Alaudeen to settle easily in the game.
Kali Alaudeen (Mahindra United)-CB- The other Tamil Nadu born central defender of Mahindra was the one marking Odafa. Kali frustrated the Nigerian with his powerful defensive work and didn’t allow the Churchill skipper to have an easy ride in the game.
Sunil Kumar (Pune FC)- LB- The defender had a solid game for the newly promoted side against the much experienced East Bengal team. Sunil did a good job defensively and also provided good support to Izumi Arata on the left side.
Shylo Malswamtulunga (Chirag United)-RM- Mama was in red hot form against one of his former clubs on Monday evening. He played a big role in the first two goals and looked threatening throughout the game. The former East Bengal player started on the left side but often interchanged with Gouranga Biswas to cause problems from both flanks.
Beto (Dempo)-CM- The Brazilian midfield maestro didn’t play the full game but looked a class apart while he was on the pitch. He got on the score sheet and dominated the midfield region along with Climax Lawrence to setup a comfortable win for Armando Colaco’s team.
Denson Devadas (Chirag United)-CM- Denson was the only player in the starting lineup, who had played for Chirag last season and thus was named captain. He marked the occasion with a man of the match performance which was instrumental in his team’s victory.
Izumi Arata (Pune FC)-LM- The Japanese born PIO (Player Of Indian Origin) was probably the most unfortunate not to score in the first round. He was outstanding on the left side for Pune in their I-League debut match so now he would be hoping to do the same week in week out.
Sunil Chhetri (Dempo)-FW- Sunil impressed on his first ever I-League match for Dempo by bagging a goal. He has already formed a good understanding with Nigerian Ranti Martins which should be bad news for defenders all around the country.
Baljit Sahni (JCT)-FW- Sahni was probably the best player of round one after scoring an impressive hat-trick against newly promoted Shillong Lajong. He is a primarily a midfielder who was made to play as a striker by coach Sukhwinder Singh and that is likely to continue in their next game against Mohun Bagan.
Special Mentions:
Climax Lawrence (CM, Dempo)- The Indian international produced a vintage performance and also scored a goal in the 3-1 win.
Anthony Pereira (RM, Dempo)- Anthony didn’t score but was the main tormentor of Mumbai FC with his runs and crosses from the right flank.
Svetozar Mijin (CM, Mahindra United)- The Serbian scored the first goal of the new I-League season and was very impressive in the first half.
Ogba Kalu Nnanna (CM, Churchill Brothers)- Kalu produced a strong performance in which he consistently outmuscled the Mahindra midfield.
Marcos Pereira (CM, Mohun Bagan)- The Brazilian scored one and was unfortunate not to bag another and was easily Bagan’s best player in the 2-3 defeat.
Josimar da Silva (FW, Chirag United)- Prior to the game, Chirag were not sure about keeping Josimar but a brace against Mohun Bagan should take care of that.
Balwant Singh (FW, JCT)- Balwant played well against Lajong and scored two goals to make the scoreline even more convincing.
