I-League: Eduardo Penalty Sinks East Bengal

JCT made their home advantage count as they got the better of Kolkata giants East Bengal in a ninth round I-League clash at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana.

Eduardo Da Silva and Karanjit Singh, JCT, India
This win comes after two back-to-back defeats at the hands of Mohun Bagan and Air India for JCT. They now have 12 points from nine games, a similar stat as their opponents.

JCT dominated the game from the start with the visitors talking too long to settle down. Sakatar Singh and Baldeep Singh Junior came close to scoring with the latter hitting the crossbar in the 34th minute.

Wing-switches and overlapping runs were a key feature of JCT’s attack which left East Bengal dumbfounded. There were many scary moments for the East Bengal defence but it remained goalless at half-time.

At the 20th minute mark, stopper back Khelemba Singh got injured was substituted for Sanju Pradhan. Coach Stanley Rosario did some shuffling with Syed Nabi moving into the right back slot while Nirmal Chhetri covered for Khelemba. Mehtab Hussain switched flanks with the incoming Sanju occupying the right.

Around the hour mark, Eduardo Da Silva squandered a good chance from 10 yards after Balwant Singh showed some great skill. The Brazilian shot it over the bar much to the disappointment of his coach Sukhwinder Singh.

East Bengal lost their second stopper back Suleh Musah and was replaced by a not so fit Muttiah Suresh.

The all important goal came in the 68th minute after Eduardo was challenged inside the area by Nirmal Chhetri and the referee had no second thoughts but to award a penalty.

Eduardo stepped and coolly slotted the ball past Subrata Paul. East Bengal couldn’t manage any worthwhile attack in the final stages as JCT frustrated them in their meagre attempts.

Mehtab Hussain was booked for simulation inside the box and would miss the next game against Dempo SC in Goa.

Final Score: 1-0

Goalscorer JCT: Eduardo Da Silva (68th pen)
