I-League: Team Of The Week - Round 7
Goal.com picks the best XI from the seventh round of I-League matches. Here is a list of all those who made it under the sun.
Felix D’Souza (Sporting Clube de Goa) The
28 year old was in top form yet again this time preventing defending champions
Dempo from scoring. This was his third consecutive clean sheet and now has
conceded only three goals this season which also makes table toppers Sporting
the best I-League team defensively.
Naoba Singh (Churchill Brothers) He ended on the losing side in the weekend but did put in a brilliant performance at the right back. The 20 year old kept going forward which forced Bagan’s Ishfaq Ahmed to keep an eye on him for the entire game and was also unlucky not to score in the second half after some clever interplay with Odafa Okolie.
Samananda Singh (Sporting Clube de Goa) Like Felix, Samananda should get special mention for his performance against Dempo on Saturday. The center back was solid throughout the game and did well to stop the likes of Ranti Martins and co.
N.S.Manju (Mohun Bagan) He was back to his best against Churchill on Sunday ensuring a clean sheet for his side by winning important tackles and headers in defense. It was always going to be difficult playing against the Churchill strikers but Manju proved why he is considered to be one of the finest defenders’ of the country.
Deepak Mandal (Mohun Bagan) A vintage performance from the veteran ensures him a place in the team of the round for the second successive round. Mohanraj’s inexperience and poor form has forced coach Karim Bencherifa to play Mandal at left back. But despite playing out of position Mondal defended brilliantly against the likes of Vashum and Bineesh Balan.
Gauranga Dutta (Chirag United) The right winger was outstanding on Saturday as he created a lot of problems for the Mohammedan defense with his pace and excellent crosses. He capped off his performance with a well taken goal in the second half which gave his team a much needed win.
Michael Tayo (Air India) The 21 year old was at the heart of the Air India midfield and his solid performance was instrumental in Air India getting all three points. Other than protecting his back four, Tayo also helped the frontline.
Marcos Periera (Mohun Bagan) The Brazilian’s performance in midfield on Sunday showed why Bagan were so desperate to take him on loan from JCT. He provided the assist Lalwampuia’s goal and later was an excellent cover for the back four. His presence has given Bagan the much needed steel and experience in midfield.
Abhishek Yadav (Vasco SC) So far it hasn’t been a good season for Vasco as they continue to occupy the bottom spot of the table but Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Mumbai FC should give them some confidence. One of their stars was midfielder Abhishek Yadav who got his name on the score sheet.
P.C. Lalwampuia (Mohun Bagan) Puia marked his return to the team with a well taken goal in the first half that gave his team a second consecutive 1-0 victory. Barreto’s suspension forced Bencherifa to start with the North eastern player and the youngster made the most of it.
Junior Obagbemiro (Sporting Clube de Goa) He was quiet for most parts of the game as Sporting had to play on the break against a dominant Dempo side. But he did get the all important winner seven minutes from the end which gave his side all three points.
