The Wolfsburg midfielder has welcomed the competition for midfield places in the Brazil squad, insisting that the Selecao need to forge a strong group ahead of the World Cup
The two are vying for a defensive midfield slot in coach Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad at next year’s World Cup after Liverpool midfielder Lucas earned his first international call-up since 2011.
And Luiz Gustavo insists he deserves his chance to impress.
"I’m happy about the return of Lucas," the Wolfsburg midfielder told Globo.
"I was with him the first few times I was called up by [former Brazil coach] Mano Menezes. He’s a quiet guy who works hard. He deserved this chance.
"Despite being a competitor, it’s important that the group is aware that there is healthy competition for places. This will strengthen us for our main objective, since we will need everyone."
