thumbnail Hello,

The promising youngster has made it clear that he only wants to play for the Albiceleste and is keen to prove his worth to the land of his birth

Inter attacker Mauro Icardi has insisted that he never considered playing for Italy as he has always dreamed of wearing the Argentina jersey.

The 20-year-old, who was born in Rosario, caught the attention of Azzurri boss Cesare Prandelli with a string of fine performances for Sampdoria last term, but he has stressed that he only wants to represent his native country after being called up for the Albiceleste's World Cup qualifier against Peru on Friday.

"Everybody in Italy knows that I'm Argentine and that the only Italian thing about me is a passport. It was a great honour what Prandelli said about me, but I'm Argentine and want to play for Argentina," Icardi told reporters.

"I have been waiting for this my entire life. I have already played for Argentina at Under-20 level and playing for the senior side is a dream.

"I know that I still have a long way to go and that I'm only here because Lionel Messi withdrew. I hope that my time will come.

"All of Argentina's attackers are of the highest level and I want to use this opportunity to learn from them."

Argentina are one of 10 countries to have already booked their ticket for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
