Salvador is located in the north-east of Brazil and is the capital of the state of Bahia.
The stadium, which has replaced the original Fonte Nova, is a similar design to the original and is covered by a lightweight metal roof. The complex will eventually also host restaurants, shops, a football museum, hotels, a concert hall and car parks.

The stadium has been redesigned by the same group who overhauled Hannover's AWD-Arena in time for the 2006 World Cup held in Germany.
