Juan Sebastian Veron: Messi is a born leader

The Estudiantes man believes that 'La Pulga' is a perfect captain for Argentina, while declaring that he has no intention of returning to the Albiceleste set-up
Estudiantes idol and former Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has backed Lionel Messi to become an excellent captain for the national side.

The 36-year-old star, who last appeared for the Albiceleste during the 2010 World Cup, was speaking on FoxSports on Wednesday, shortly before Argentina's clash with Switzerland. Messi netted his first international hat-trick during the encounter, as his side grabbed a 3-1 victory in Bern.

Even before the triple, Veron was in no doubt that his former international team-mate was the right choice for leader, despite his subdued nature away from the field.

"I do not guide myself by interviews and declarations to the press, I do it by the attitude I see on the pitch. Messi is a born leader and the responsibility does not weigh him down," 'La Bruja' affirmed.

The veteran has been linked with a return to the Seleccion, as ex-Estudiantes coach Alejandro Sabella is a keen fan and has previously opened the door for his former captain to play a role.

Questioned on Wednesday, however, Veron dismissed the idea that he would be pulling on the Argentina shirt again.

"What goals could I possibly have with the national team? Playing one more game for my statistics?" he wondered aloud, affirming that his international career was over.

Seba's Estudiantes side are currently unbeaten in the Clausura 2012, having picked up a win and two draws from their opening encounters.
