Big-spending Shanghai Shenhua have moved to quell rumours in the Chinese media claiming they have nearly completed the signing of Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

Shanghai TV (STV) reported earlier this week that Shenhua were on the verge of a deal for the Ivory Coast striker, who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the season's end and is reportedly also been chased by clubs from Russia and the MLS.

However, Shenhua officials denied the report which said the deal could be done by the Chinese New Year (January 23).

Shenhua director Zhou Jun told reporters: "We could understand the passions and wishes of fans but the situation is not as easy as we think. Drogba is a high-level star, many clubs are chasing him.

"In my opinion, it is good news that our transfer requests are not turned down. There are a few days left to the Spring Festival (January 23), how could we get everything done so fast?

"There are many difficult things, maybe we could get good news before the CSL season starts, maybe after the season starts."

English newspaper The Mirror had also claimed last week that the Chinese club, who recently signed Nicolas Anelka from the Blues, were closing in on Drogba with a lucrative two-and-a-half year deal believed to be worth €360,000 per week.

Where do you think Didier Drogba will move next, or will he stay at Chelsea?
