UEFA Chief Michel Platini: No To Video Replays
Platini has never been an advocate of using video evidence during matches, and Thierry Henry's controversial handball has not made him change his mind...
UEFA president Michel Platini has kicked out any ideas of introducing video technology in football, claiming it's not the right solution to stamp out cheating.
His comments come following the uproar that was caused by France's controversial World Cup qualifying play-off win over Ireland. Thierry Henry's handball offence was a potentially decisive factor in the match.
A number of high profile figures have lobbied for the use of technology to help assist match officials in moments of difficulty, but Platini is standing firm.
The Frenchman has razed any suggestions of using cameras, but he is keen to push through with experiments that are being pioneered in the Europa League, where extra officials stand behind goal to help referees and linesmen.
"An extra referee behind the goal would have seen Henry's handball," Platini told L'Equipe.
"Video replays on the pitch? It's a bad solution. We talk about big games, but could we really have 20 cameras in a match between Andorra and the Faroe Islands?
"We must respect fairness in all occasions."
