I-League: It Was The Happiest Moment - Kalu Nnanna
Churchill Brothers have found a new hero and it’s another Nigerian. Ogba Kalu Nnanna scored a brace and put on a splendid performance to help his side beat Mohun Bagan 3-1 on Wednesday.
Such was Kalu’s display that his opposite numbers in Lal
Kamal Bhowmick and Marcos Pereira looked mere shadows of themselves. He was
winning the balls, tackles, and made unchecked forward runs.
He doesn’t have the vision of Beto or the skills of Douhou but his work rate and commitment is one of the best. Living in the shadow of other stars can be a little overwhelming but not for this midfielder.
He has been Churchill’s one of the most consistent players since joining and didn’t take long to replace Fabio Vidal. This season has been a great one for this 23 year old as he has already scored five goals so far in the league.
“God is responsible for all this. I thank my team-mates for all their support and the Churchill Brothers family. We have been working hard and its bringing results at last,” said Kalu.
Alongwith Chitra Singh, he has formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the park from where they dominate the proceedings for Churchill Brothers.
Seldom would one find rival coaches mention his name as one of the important players for Churchill Brothers as for them the Goan side is run by one man – Odafa Okolie.
Coming back to the win against Mohun Bagan and Kalu states that he, alongwith his team-mates, were stunned when the Kolkata side took the lead.
“When they scored, I was shocked. It came out of nowhere. We got the equaliser before the end of the first half. In the dressing room, we told ourselves that we need to prove ourselves. We came back strongly and won the game.
“It was the happiest day of my life and is a great step for us. Scoring two goals against a big team like Mohun Bagan is a big achievement for me.”
What are Kalu’s thoughts on the title race?
“I can’t say. We don’t know what God is planning for us at the end of the season. Who knows what tomorrow may be,” adds Kalu philosophically.
