I-League: We Played Well But Were Inconsistent – Karim Bencherifa
After their victory over Mohammedan Sporting on Sunday, Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa expressed his delight at stretching the winning run but did admit that his team were inconsistent during the match.
Bagan defeated Mohammedan 1-0 in the I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday evening to extend their winning run to 10 league matches and sustain their two-point lead at the top of the table.
Addressing the media after the match, Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa gave his take on his side’s performance, "I felt that we were a bit inconsistent during the match today. This wasn’t the usual Mohan Bagan.
"But we defended well and created good chances. I should give credit to Mohammedan Sporting too. They played well and if they carry on playing like this, then they will be safe (from relegation)."
This was Bagan’s tenth league win a row and keeps them in pole position, two points ahead of Goan giants Sporting Clube de Goa, who defeated Churchill Brothers 1-0 earlier on Sunday.
When asked whether this was a special win for Bencherifa, who celebrates his birthday on the day, the Bagan coach warned that they should not get carried away with the situation.
"To be honest, this is not a special occasion. We are at the top of the table again and it is very important that we maintain this position.
"We’ve now won ten matches in a row in the league and it is a very good number. But I will be more satisfied with this run if at the end of the season we win the I-League."
When asked about the referring standards during the match, the Bagan coach said, "I don’t think that I should talk about the referee now."
"But I would say that he was a bit inconsistent during the match, like us," Bencherifa added with a smile.
