Christoph Metzelder might have been outcast under his fellow countryman Bernd Schuster, but the German international is hoping for a new start under a new coach.
Following the arrival of Juande Ramos at Real Madrid today, Metzelder spoke to AS and sounded optimistic about the new era.
"For the players who have not played a lot it is a possibility to begin again, because a new coach has arrived," he declared.
"For me it is an important moment to show my quality, I expect that I can play a little bit more next week."
The departure of Schuster might have been rumoured to be imminent, but when the axe finally fell earlier today it came as a surprise to many - including the players. Metzelder says the squad have still had to work, despite the change, and have not yet said goodbye to their former coach.
"He has sent a message to all the players but I have not seen him today or spoken to him," he mused.
"The team and the players are obliged to react as quickly as possible, I do not want to speak more about the change. We have a new coach and we are what we are."
Real Madrid face Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League tomorrow and whilst Metzelder confirmed that it was a not a 'game played with our lives', given that they have secured qualification already, he did affirm that 'it is a competition to respect.'
The defending La Liga champions have been in poor form as of late domestically and even though the German defender has his eye on Europe, he acknowledged they need to improve in Spain.
"It [the Champions league] is our objective this season and it is possible to react fast and win over the fans in the Bernabéu," he said.
"Tomorrow we have the last game and it is important for our situation.Until Christmas we must focus on the league and improve our position. Later we have a free week and we must attack again with the players that return, the league is very important for me."
