Getafe Chief: Madrid Bonus Talks In Bad Taste

Getafe president Ángel Torres was not impressed that Real Madrid's incredible offer of a bonus to win their next few games was leaked amid the current economic climate.

With Spain's unemployment rate rising rapidly as a result of the credit crunch, reports that Los Merengues' were preparing to give their highly-paid stars a huge prize fund has not gone down well.

Madrid have stated that it is money for an appearance in the Middle East at Christmas, but Torres thought it was bad taste to hear that each player would receive €120,000 if the team win five consecutive matches.

"It sets a bad example to be talking lightly about that amount of money when there is an economic crisis in the country, with almost three million people out of work," the Getafe chief told Marca.

"I think that it is better to discuss these things secretly and not to put the pressure on to the players to achieve something like this."

Initial reports stated that Ramón Calderón had come up with the idea of a financial reward, to go on top of the players' basic wages, appearance money and win bonuses, in a bid to end talk of a crisis at the club.

But that has now been denied, with Madrid stating that the money would be given over as payment for the planned trip over the festive period and that the players had said they would only accept it if they won seven games.
