Mahindra United Win Durand Cup
Just two minutes on to the field and Thoi Singh scored an extra time winner to help Mahindra United win the Durand Cup after a span of six years at the expense of defending champions Churchill Brothers.
A left footed cross from skipper Krishnan Ajayan Nair saw Thoi slot the ball into the net in the 99th minute and thus break Churchill hearts. It was the Goan side who took an early lead through Roberth Lalthampuana in the 12th minute though the first chance of the game fell to the Red Devils when Arata Izumi was in an one-on one situation only to hit the far post on it’s way out.
Nigerian striker Chidi Edeh showed his class and restored parity for his side with a headed goal eight minutes later.
Then came the key moment in the clash as midfielder Douhou won a free-kick in the Churchill half. The referee blew his whistle before the Goan side could arrange its wall. Mahindra made the most of it as Chidi scored another off a Douhou free-kick and thus put the Jeepmen in an advantageous position.
The second half saw Mahindra United have much of the possession and missed a few chances. Three minutes from time, Odafa Okolie made his presence felt as he out-muscled three Mahindra defenders to set up Savio Monteiro’goal which took the game into extra-time.
Coach Derrick Pereira substituted Arata Izumi for Thoi Singh and it gave the desired result instantly as within minutes Mahindra had the lead.
Final Score: 3-2
Goalscorers Mahindra: Chidi Edeh (20th & 32th) and Thoi Singh (99th)
Goalscorers Churchill: Robert Lalthampuana (12th) and Savio Monteiro (87th)
