Latics yet to win at home...Wigan Athletic were unable to register a victory at home as Manchester City gained a victory to leapfrog several clubs and land on the fifts spot in the Premier League standings.
Carlos Tevez ensured that the visitors drew first blood with an exceptional finish, while Yaya Toure added another during the second half to propel the Eastlands club to fifth in the standings.
The home side saw the return of young forward Victor Moses, who returned to the squad having been absent for the last two games owing to an ankle problem. The 19-year-old came back in to claim a spot on the bench.
In the meantime, Latics boss Roberto Martinez had to make do without the services of influential defender Gary Caldwell, who missed the encounter due to a hip injury.
City boss Roberto Mancini had been sweating on the fitness of striker Emmanuel Adebayor, as the Togolese player missed the recent Europa League victory in Salzburg due to a dead leg. Unfortunately for the away side, the 26-year-old was unable to recover in time to make the cut for this match.
The travellers also missed defender Jerome Boateng, who was out due to a knee injury. But Roque Santa Cruz was fit and took a spot among the substitutes.
And so began the game at the DW Stadium, as the rain-affected surface caused the pitch to turn a little slippery. City defender Micah Richards slipped twice before coming off for a brief period, most likely to change to longer studs to aid in a better grip.
The early stages were dominated by the visitors, who had a lion's share of the possession. But the Latics' offside trap appeared to be working well as skipper Carlos Tevez and Pablo Zabaleta were caught in an unlawful position.
With a little less than 15 minutes on the clock, defender Vincent Kompany passed one to Tevez, who created some space and sent in a shot from range. But the end result was a goal kick, as the effort went just wide of the post.
Despite all the possession, the visitors were unable to operate as a unit as Wigan were able to nip the attacks in the bud.
But this was not so as the interval approached, as a long ball from goalkeeper Joe Hart saw midfielder Mohamed Diame glance it into the path of Tevez, who coolly dinked the ball over the onrushing 'keeper to mark his side's first away goal in the league this season.
Four minutes into the second period, Charles N'Zogbia and Gareth Barry were involved in a nasty collision that saw the Frenchman requiring some attention. But luckily for the hosts, the winger was able to continue.
In the meantime, Mancini's men were caught ball watching as defender Maynor Figueroa was allowed to take a shot, but his effort bore no fruit as it went well above the crossbar.
Close to the hour mark, there was some concern on the City bench as Tevez limped away following a tackle from defender Steve Gohouri, but the forward came back on to run it off. But it was only a matter of minutes before he was at the receiving end of another challenge, as a late tackle from N'Zogbia saw the forward having to endure some more rough treatment at the DW Stadium.
But the Argentine continued to do his job as he sent one in towards goal, but shot-stopper Ali Al-Habsi was on hand to prevent the visitors from doubling their lead.
But the away side did manage to secure a two-goal cushion with a little over 20 minutes to go, as Tevez let one loose across goal as Yaya Toure was in the six-yard-box to put the ball into the back of the net.
Over at the other end, Diame was in with a chance to pull one back for the Latics, but his effort was poor as it went over the bar. And with less than 10 minutes to go, the Frenchman had another opportunity to reduce the lead, but his header went just wide of the post.
The hosts kept trying to push forward and grab a goal during the proceedings, but Mancini's charges remained in control as the clocked ticked away. And as the referee brought the game to a halt, it was City who recorded their first away win of the season that saw them rocket upwards to fifth place in the standings.
