Copa America Preview: Venezuela - Ecuador

Both sides will be looking to pick up a vital three points after claiming valuable draws against Brazil and Paraguay respectively in their opening fixtures

Venezuela: Vega; Rosales, Vizcarrondo, Perozo, Cichero; Lucena, Gonzalez, Rincon; Arango, Miku, Rondon

Venezuela are likely to name the same side who picked up an impressive draw against holders Brazil in their opening game of Group B. Tomas Rincon will be a key figure again for the nation if they are to keep their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals alive.

Ecuador: Elizaga; Reasco, Araujo, Erazo, Ayovi; Castillo, Noboa, Mendez, Arroyo; Benitez, Caicedo

Reinaldo Rueda has already picked his starting XI, making several changes from the side who picked up a 0-0 draw versus Paraguay last weekend. As expected, Michael Arroyo comes into the side on the wing in place of Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia, who is injured.

  • Venezuela have won their previous three games against Ecuador with the most recent coming in a 1-0 friendly win in 2010.
  • Both sides have never won the Copa America, with Chile being the only other South American nation not to win the competition.
  • Juan Arango is the nation's second-most capped player and is only five appearances away from playing his 100th international match.
  • The Venezuela squad for the Copa America have scored 86 goals between them.
  • Ecuador are draw specialists of late, drawing five and losing one of their previous six fixtures.
  • 15 of Ecuador's 23 man squad currently play in the nation's domestic league with the remaining players based in England, Belgium, Mexico, Spain and Russia.
  • Ecuador have qualified for two World Cups in 2002 and 2006, qualifying for the round of 16 in the latter, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to England.
  • Ecuador and Venezuela are currently ranked 68th and 69th in the Fifa World Rankings, with only Bolivia (93) ranked lower out of the sides in this summer's Copa America.
