Shots on Target
Full Time: United SC 3-1 Sporting CLube de Goa. Stay tuned to goal for updates about the other matches.
90' + 2'
Only moments left now. What a win on the cards for United! I have been Atanu Mitra, one of the few eye-witnesses of this brilliance. United SC has everything that one needs to challenge for the title. Keep an eye on them.
90' + 1'
Goal Eric Brown
ERIC BROWN!! GOAALLL!! What a strike!Runs for 60 yards, managing to dodge everybody that came his way. And then puts it into the net with ease. 3-1 for United.
Not the best of goals, but one of the best celebrations of the league so far. Goes on his knees like Drogba (Yes, you read it right!) and takes rest for a few minutes.
Goal Biswajit Biswas
GOAALLLL AND JUST WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT! His ambition is rewarded. Ranty's week shot came off Ravi Kumar as the custodian fails to grip the wet ball and slips in the process. Biswajit slots the ball home with ease. Great strike, Great finish. U-23 Indian player on a song and that certainly is a good sign for Indian football.
AMBITIOUS! Nutmeg from Biswajit but the touch was so bad, that he himself fails to reach it.
Ranti trapped offside again. He was lazy to drop down when suddenly Jayanta plays him a long ball.
Both the teams trying to build up from their defense. But mispasses playing spoilsport in their missions.
Very impressive performance from the both the teams, though it lasted only 45 minutes for both of them. First half was United's while Sporting has dominated the second half.
CHANCE! ERIC BROWN! What a shot by the ex-ONGC man. The only bad thing about the strike was that it was aimed straight at the goalkeeper, who clears it away for a corner. No harm done from the corner.
Eelco enters the ground and involves himself in an argument with the referee about Shouvik's caution.
Yellow Card Soumik Chakraborty
Mohammed Rafique comes off making way for Biswajit Biswas, who made the headlines last week for playing 5 minutes in the last match as the U-23 player.
Shouvik and Jayanta have been very poor. It shows what Lalkamal Bhowmick adds to the side.
BELO SAVES THE DAY! WHERE ARE THOSE TWO SIDEBACKS GONE? Belo once again snatches the ball from Pereira's feet only yards away from the goalline. Rubbish defending from United. It's Sporting vs Bello now.
Sporting has another change as the goalscorer goes off and Mauvin Borges comes on. So, Oscar Bruzon has now employed all four of his foreigners in the act.
KEEP AN EYE ON THIS GUY! Eric Brown plays a good diagonal cross to the other end of the box. Rafique had everything ready on the plate to score his first I-League goal of the season, but his header went away from the near post of Ravi.
United has been a different side altogether in the second half. They now lack the nail in the opponent box, though both of their foreign strikers are working overtime.
Eric Brown claims a corner for United, but Ravi fists the danger away. United fails to pull off a shot on the rebound.
Dhanachandra Singh has had a very bad day in office. Often caught out of position, the left-back has allowed the opponets to attack the United center-backs easily.
Lalkamal has been substituted with Jayanta Sen taking his place in the midfield. Looks like a tactical substitution.
Yellow Card Matthew Gonsalves
Only a yellow card for Mathew. Could have been a red easily. Bad advertisement of Indian football before a audience that consists mostly of kids.
On-field tussle going on between Belo Rasaq and Matthew Gonsalves, . Now many players getting involve d in the scuffle. Cards will follow surely.
Goal Victorino Fernandes
GOAAALLLL!! Sporting score and and they deserved it. Belo Rasaq loses his balance on a wet pitch, which allows Jovel Martins to play a quick pass to Victorino only 8 yards away from the goalline. He didn't have much to do, as he had the entire breadth of the net to aim. Bad defending from United.
A number of shots from the Sporting side. United defense failing to get hold of them .
CHANCE! SAVE ! Dhanachandra Singh fails to mark Victorino Fernandes as the Sporting man invades the United box. Sangram pulls off a great save from the one-on-one postions.
RANTI! A half-turn and a quick shot. Ranti creates danger from nowhere. Rafique takes a shot after Ravi Kumar fisted it, but the ball goes well over the crossbar. Should have done better there, the U-23 player.
Sangram is down and receiving medical attention. Just when Ishan Debnath, the reserve keeper started to warm up, Sangram is back to his feet and the game resumes.
Sporting create early chances as they secure an early corner. However, it is gathered easily by Sangram. He initiates a counter-attack but Ranti Martins fail to capitalize it and had to settle for a throw-in only.
Half Time substituion for the hosts as Shouvik Chakraborty replaces Vineeth. Vineeth is injured as he has a bandage wrapped round his left elbow. Remember, Shouvik has scored a world-class goal in the midweek against Mohammedan Sporting in the Kolkata legaue.
Can United retain their one-goal lead? Find out as Goal remains the only source of live information.
Eelco Schattorie is the first man to come out of the dressing room running in the rain. The players follow soon and the action is only a couple of monents away from resuming.
I have been your host, Atanu Mitra. I am off for ten minutes. Stay tuned for the second half updates.
Good passing football gifted United the elusive one-goal lead. But they have been sloppy in the last few minutes of the first half, allowing Sporting to claim some dominance in the midfield.
Half-time Scoreline: United S.C 1-0 Sporting Clube de Goa.
An electrifying first half comes to an end with United resting on a slim one-goal cushion. No prizes for guessing the goalscorer as Ranti Martins slotted home a good pass from Vineeth after missing a sitter only a minute ago. He doesn't take much time to make ammends!
SLUGGISH! United has given away the ball too casually after gaining the lead.
BAD DEFENDING! Anupam Sarkar goes for a quick nap in the six-yard box, resulting in Victorino receiving the ball only a couple of yards away from the goal. The Goan hitman however, took a moment extra to shoot, only to allow Belo jump to his legs and block the shot. Shamblic defensive organization from the hosts.
Eric Brown has been brilliant with the ball, but this time he is a bit late to release the ball and Sporting claims the possession.
Jovel Martins is the first Sporting player to go into the referee's book after he hurts Deepak with an ill-timed tackle.
Yellow Card Jovel Martins
Sangram has been the busier of the keepers as his teammates have played a number of back-passes over the length of the first half. He has been comfortable with possession, never fumbling with opponent forwards rushing towards him.
Yellow Card Bello Rasaq
Surprisingly, United have been sluggish for the last few minutes. Belo now goes into the referee's book after a bad challenge near the right touchline.
That's a brand new Anupam Sarkar for you. A flying clearance from the stopper which would have otherwise set Boima one-on-one with Sangram.
Vineeth is lying on the floor and receiving medical treatment. From here, it seems like he has hurt his left elbow. Things sorted and he is agian back to action.
Yellow Card Eric Brown
A defesive error again, this time from the veteran Deepak Mondal. Eric Brown drops deep to parry away the danger, but his tactical foul hands him a yellow card. The first booking of the match.
Fumble! Nervy defending from the United defense. Lalkamal slips on the wet field almost giving away the ball to Boima inside the six-yard box. Belo settles for a corner.
Sporting have looked like a side running out of ideas. They need to build this up patiently while heavy downpour starts to spoil the mood.
Eelco's men have been brilliant. Another attack down the right flank and now Deepak Mondal leads the attack this time, but Ranti fails to reach the cross delivered by him.
Yellow Card Lalkamal Bhowmick
Sporting looks rejuvenated now after conceding. They claim a corner but Jovel Maritins looked selfish to take a long-ranhge effort, while a number of his teammates were in better positions to shoot.
Goal Ranti Martins
GOAAALLLLL!! RANTI MARTINS PROVES ME WRONG! What a display by the United midfield. Rafique plays a diagonal ball to Vineeth on the right flank, wo gets the better of a couple of Sporting defenders. Vineeth then played a good ground pass to Ranti who only had the opponent custodian to beat. United are 1 goal up.
CHANCE! WASTED! Eric Brown plays a gem of a through pass to Ranti and the talismanic Nigerian only had Ravi Kumar to beat. However, he failed to go past the keeper on the edge of the box. Vintage Ranti would score 9 goals out of 10 such occasions. Bad day for him.
Boima Karpeh has looked dangerous, testing Anupam Sarkar in almost every move. Belo Rasaq, on the other hand, has been as dependable as he has ever been.
Joseh Pereira plays a good square pass to Victorino, who took a shot from outside of the box. It was a good curled strike, catching Sangram wrong-footed. The ball however failed to hit the target.
After having a good last game against Mumbai FC, Jovel Martins has looked sluggish today. Not much on the platter from the left wing of Sporting.
Boima Karpeh gets involved in some heated words with the referee. No cards coming out of the pocket, though.
The United srikers have to be more cautious. They are getting trapped by the offside rule every now and then. A flurry of offsides in the opening 15 minutes.
IMPRESSIVE! CHANCE! Boima Karpeh walks down the middle with the ball and takes a powerful shot from the left edge of the box. The strike missed the goal only by a few inches. Good work from the Liberian. The game is opening up now.
The visitors also trying to build up patiently. However, they lose the ball casually, resulting in Eric Brown playing a long ball to Ranti. The Nigerian, however failed to reach it.
Rafique pulls off a rash challenge. The referee talks to him, but no early booking from the man with the whistle. The free-kick did no harm though.
United have dominated the first few minutes, but have failed to make any clear-cut chances.Shirodikar , however takes the first shot of the match, but it missed the goal by miles.
A number of attaractive short pases from the United defense. They however, took resort to long diagonal ball on the opponent defense but Ranti failed to snatch it from the alert backline.
Vineeth shows some skills with the ball in the left flank but eventually the Mathew Gonsalves does a good job to regain possession.
Half-hearted through ball from Rafique, easy snatching for the Sporting defense.
Eric is playing as a midfielder today in the hole just behind Ranti Martins. A number of long balls has been played to the Nigerian, but to little result.
Ravi Kumar takes the resulant free-kick but a melee in the middle of the pitch and Lal settles for a throw-in.
Ambitious Ranti! He plays a through ball to the onrushing Vineeth but the Kerala boy is offside.
United trying to play cautious passes among themselves. Early bit of possession for the hosts.
And we are off!
The players are going through the pre-match handshakes.
So, the players are walking out into the ground in an overcast condition. It looks like a football carnival here as lot of boys aged between 9-13 have been given free entries by the United officials. Clad in Brazil jerseys, they are ready to shout their hearts out for the club. All set for a perfect Sunday afternoon for Indian football lovers.
Sporting Starting XI: Ravi Kumar, Mathew Gonsalves, Garcia, Neila, Jovel Martins, Joseph Pereira, Shirodikar, Rowlin Borges, Dawson Fernandes, Boima Karpeji, Victorino Fernandes
United SC starting Line-up: Sangram; Deepak, Belo, Anupam, Dhanachandra; Lalkamal, Rafique, Asif, Vineeth; Eric Brown, Ranti
For United, Mohammed Rafique is now fully fit and is part of the starting XI. Tapan Maity is unavailable for the game due to the ankle injury he suffered in the last match.
Ogba Kalu, however is unavailable in today’s tie as the coach has hinted at his lack of match fitness as the reason of his exclusion. With the highest scorer of the last two seasons missing, Dawson Fernandes, Victorino Fernandes and Liberian Boima Jerry Karpeh are expected to spearhead the attack for Sporting Goa.
On the other hand, the travellers led by the Spanish coach Oscar Bruzon drew 1-1 with Mumbai FC in their opening game of the season and is eagerly in search of their first win to get their campaign well and truly going. In the last match, Ogba Kalu’s spot-kick gave them the relief after they were trailing 0-1 in the half-time.
United Sports has started the season on an impressive note as they notched up a comfortable 2-0 win against the young Rangdajied United side last Sunday. Eric Brown scored the first goal for his new club while Ranti Martins as usual included his name in the scorers’ list.
And what have they done to this stadium!! Kalyani certainly had the best ground in West Bengal and they now have a properly equipped press box also. The stage is all set, craving for the performers to come out.
No TV telecast of the match and so this remains your only way to get regular updates as the cash-strapped Kolkata side try to get the better of the Goan outfit.
